About

Dews From Heaven is a blog dedicated to close, in-depth, and faithful readings of LDS texts dealing with the priesthood. Its title is taken from D&C 121:45:

“The doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.”

In order to better understand how scripture explains or explores the priesthood, we plan to study chapters and sections of LDS scripture which are entirely or mostly focused on priesthood. Our list currently includes:

  • Alma 13
  • D&C 20
  • D&C 68
  • D&C 84
  • D&C 107
  • D&C 121
  • D&C 124
  • D&C 128
  • D&C 130
  • D&C 132
  • Moses 6
  • Abraham 1
  • Abraham 2

About the authors & contributors:

AAA - GravatarKim Berkey is a stay-at-home mom of twin toddlers who reads scripture in between tantrums and diaper changes. She completed her B.A. in Ancient Near East Studies from Brigham Young University in 2011, and plans to pursue graduate work in theology once her children are old enough to go to the bathroom by themselves.

Karen Spencer is also a stay-at-home mom, currently homeschooling her oldest three children. She Dews From Heaven picturegraduated from Brigham Young University in 2003 with a B.A. in Humanities, emphasis in English literature. Karen, Kim, Jenny, and Candice have each participated in at least one Mormon Theology Seminar, including producing a paper based on the seminar’s findings. Karen enjoys reading books on scripture, philosophy, and religion with her husband. Her favorite “theological moments,” however, have taken place with friends in scripture study groups in her living rooms.

JennyJenny Webb feels pretty lucky to have been invited to work with Karen and Kim on this project, both of whom she admires for a myriad of reasons! Jenny works from home as a mother and editor. She received her MA from BYU in Comparative Literature, sits on the Mormon Theology Seminar Executive Board, and works with several academic journals as a Managing / Production Editor.

Why this blog:

As authors and friends, we have been thinking about and discussing priesthood for several years, both independently and together. Amid the recent conversations about priesthood in LDS circles and on the bloggernacle, we were intrigued to note how little attention had been paid to scripture. We created this blog as a space to catalog our continuing dialogue and perhaps spark some discussion on the theology of priesthood contained in the standard works.

Although Dews From Heaven grew out of discussion surrounding the question of female ordination, it is neither reacting against nor affiliated with any Mormon feminist group. The source of our interest in scripture is our deep commitment to studying the gospel of Christ. If this blog serves only to increase our personal understanding of LDS priesthood, then we will have felt our desires satisfied. However, we would be happy if the presence of this blog also serves to show how much work remains to be done on LDS scriptural theology and to demonstrate the productivity of close readings of LDS texts.
